Book Review

It's not a comic and it's an old book I finally got around to reading, but it's as comic book related as they come!

Man of Two Worlds: My Life in Science Fiction and Comics by the late Julius Schwartz is a breezy tour of science fiction fandom, including Schwartz's role in birthing the first SF fanzine and his involvement in the first cons, including the first WorldCon. He covers his career as an agent for a Who's Who of SFF writers, inclduing Ray Bradbury, then his career switch to editing over at DC Comics. I knew some of the stories, but not nearly all, and though fairly lightweight as memoirs go, this is a quick, fun read.

Photo Post

If ever there was doubt Amy Reeder would be an excellent choice to draw this book, this should dispel it. Kara looks lovely. I didn't get the variant cover. Actually, I didn't know about it until I saw the credits inside on my ride home, so I checked it online and it's wonderful. But this cover rocks, too. The story started off great and it looks like Gates is determined to go out with a bang. There's just so much going on, and the toys are creepy, as creepy as clowns. Igle and Sibal's art is wonderful. Igle draws wonderful expressions, more realistic than Amanda Conner's but with the same level of emotion.

And this arrived yesterday. It comes with a handle! I included the action figures so you could get a sense of it's size. 75 Years of DC Comics promises to be an experience to read.

On My Shelves

Okay, I still have reviews to post. But meanwhile, enjoy these peeks at my non-comics comics and cartoon books.

DC Comics Covergirls

IMG_0159

Went to Forbidden Planet today as planned and picked up my copy of Louise Simonson's DC Comics Covergirls, which is one fine looking book.

Louise was friendly and interesting to talk to. There wasn't much of a crowd, just people drifting slowly toward her table at the rear of the store, so I had time to chat with her. She was simply delightful.

IMG_0198I'm looking forward to reading this. The photos and layout are great, with lots of Supergirl coverage (Yay!) I also got Mike Essl, one of the book's designers, to autograph it, along with Louise. He seemed a bit stunned than someone -- anyone -- would want his autograph. But he deserves credit for a beautifully designed book and asking for his autograph was the only way I knew to really show my appreciation.
