Quick Reviews

Didn't get this week's comics yet because it was raining too hard to walk over to Forbidden Planet lunch hour or after work. I hope I can get there tomorrow. I really want to get my hands on the new Wonder Woman book. So for now, here's what I've just read....

Birds of Prey 94
This continues what is shaping up to be an intriguing arc. We get some more insight into Shiva's character and she gets her comeuppance at the end, leaving things in a nice cliffhanger for next month. And the scenes with Dinah really sizzled. She's having to face some truths about herself, which is the usual great character development I've come to expect from Gail Simone. The art is nice.

Catwoman 55
Another nice bit of building up an interesting plotline. The art suits the book and the cover is as gorgeous as its recent predecessors. Holly is a wonderful character, Wildcat's appearance is handled well, the flashback to Selina deciding to hang up her costume was much appreciated, and her meeting with Slam was a neat scene. I also loved the little bits, especially when Selina, in trying to zip up her costume, discovers she hasn't lost all the weight she'd gained during pregnancy. Realism like that really enhances a comic book.

Hawkgirl 52
We get some more clues as to what's going on with the museum and Kendra, but not too much. Simonson is feeding us details at a slow pace, but there's enough action to keep the book moving along. I'm getting used to everyone grimacing and I've always liked Chaykin's art, but I hope things break sooner than later. I need a few more clues, guys, to keep up my interest. Still, I'm enjoying it, and that's what counts.

Aquaman 42
I'm not sure why, but I'm really enjoying this. This Arthur is such a, pardon the expression, fish out of water, but the way people react to him and his counter reactions is fun. His innocence comes through nicely and the art is liquid and dark, very oceanic.

52 3-4
I'd hoped to have this week's issue to review with these, but I'll make due with these 2 for now. There really isn't much to say as we're really being given this in real time, more or less, so not much happens as we get glimpses of what many people are up to. Still, there are intriguing developments (resurrecting Sue?!) and the sheer fun of every panel Booster Gold appears in.

JSA Classified 12
Better than the previous issues as we get into the meat of the story. Vandal Savage has never been one of my fav villains, but I do like the original Green Lantern, so I'm starting to get interested in what's going on here. I'll wait to see how this turns out before I'll know if I'm really liking it.

Blue Beetle 3
This continues to be a delight, with a teen boy who acts and sounds like one. The whole "you've been gone for a year" bit was well handled and the storyline took a jump forward at the end of the issue. I'm looking forward to the next issue, which surprises me a bit. I was willing to give this book a chance, but I wasn't expecting much. But so far, it's been fun.

I love Chaykin's art, but this is not much of a build up and way too slow.
I am staying on it in hopes that there is a big payoff. This team couuldn;t let me down. Could they?

  2. I know what you mean. I'm trying to be open-minded, give them the benefit of the doubt, but the payoff better be worth the wait.
