Five Reviews

Gotta love my clever titles for these posts. :)

Green Arrow Year 1 - 1
Wow, Ollie is more of a cad and spoiled playboy in this than originally. And there's more bite to this version of him being dumped in the ocean. The art is stunning. I'm liking this a lot. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Shadowpact 15
The most shocking cliffhanger ending I've seen in a while. Doctor Gotham isn't a run-of-the-mill magical villain. Zauriel is fitting in and the dialogue is maintaining the touch of lunacy I've come to love in the book.

Blue Beetle 16
A bit disjointed, but the Dibny connection was nicely handled. The art was nice, too. Not the best of the series so far, but solidly entertaining.

JSA Classified 27 - Wildcat
No big surprises, but another solid read. Hard to not like a book that features Ted Grant.

Justice Society of America 7
Okay, I cried. This was a very moving story. Power Girl is definitely team leader and the peekaboo window in her costume was the smallest I've seen it in ages. The scene with Superman and Thom were poignant. When Supes ended up drinking the milk because Thom said "It makes your bones stronger," I felt a pang in my heart. Supes is so gentle with him. And I was glad, if that's possible in such a situation, that Thom didn't miraculously recover mentally after the rescue of Dream Girl. But for all of Thom's mental problems, Nathan Heywood's physical situation is the perfect counterpoint. Full of emotion and he can't physically feel. The panel with him seeing his reflection in his hands was a perfect blend of story and art. And when he got to see his surviving family at the end, the tears welled up in my eyes. I was on the subway, coming home, and didn't want to be seen bawling over a comic, but still, you had to be inhuman to not be moved by that scene. And I like the cover, even if it seems a bit toned down in the crotch department. Easily my favorite book this week.

  1. There were some darned good books out. I found myself liking Green Arrow a lot more than I originally thought that I would.

The whole Dentist scene in Blue Beetle just cracked me up. And bringing in Traci Thirteen was a stroke of genius.

But yes, the scene with Superman and Thom eating the sloppy Joes, and drinking their milk was funny and a little sad all at the same time. And no Geoforce! A bonus!

  2. I agree, Sally. I don't get the attraction of Geoforce, either.
