Review Revue

Still working on catching up, and I really don't want to review every issue of titles I've had sitting here for.... well, best you don't know how long. ;)

One title I caught up with is Hawkeye. I don't read many Marvel titles, none really in recent years, but this got such good reviews, I had to give it a try, and wow, it's wonderful. The newest issue, Hawkeye 11, is told from the pov of his dog, Lucky, aka Pizza Dog, and it's a small masterpiece. The art by David Aja really makes the book. This is a sparsely written, starkly illustrated series, with standout black, white, and red covers. The stories are largely told in a non-linear style, and as this issue emphasizes, writer Matt Fraction isn't afraid to take chances and do something atypical for a superhero book.

Astro City 1
I'd read the first Astro City compilation, but not the rest, because I didn't know about them. You don't really need to have read the previous books to be able to read this. The story, like the ones I'd read previously, is a self-contained tale of everyday citizens of Astro City and how the react and interact with the superheroes in their midst. This story is narrated by someone in a mental institution, which is a bit concerting, but the visitor from another world plot is nicely handled, and feels like part of a bigger whole. How the issues will thread together remains to be seen, of course, and I'll probably at some point, seek out the seven volumes I haven't read, but for now, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Jupiter's Legacy 2
All is not well in the extended family of superheroes, especially between the sibling patriarchs, and their bickering over some fundamental issues regarding what is and what isn't something they should get involved with is about to draw in the younger generation. This is a very character-driven superhero tale being woven by Millar and Quitely, and a good one.

    1. He sure is. :) And nothing like any other Marvel comic I've ever read.
