Mal and the Gals

I got the Alex Ross Zatanna action figure today. I hadn't realized her hat was removable. Sweet.

Mal and the Gals

Not everyone likes Ross' art, but it sure makes for realistic action figures, almost as realistic as the molds made from actual people. Which isn't to say more cartoonish art doesn't make for lovely action figures, but there is definitely something about figures based on his art that get me jazzed. And I much prefer more realistic figures over the almost surreal ones based on art such as Michael Turner's. The emaciated Supergirl he drew, which was bearable (for me) on paper, is just hideous, IMO, as an action figure.

I passed on the Hawkman, though he was quite nice, partly because I don't want winged folks (they take up a lot of room) and he was rather heavy. The Captain Marvel and Black Adam figures are great, but not characters I feel the need to own. Maybe if they did a nice Capt. Marvel, Jr. Or Mary Marvel....

  1. Please tell me she comes with a tiny, plastic hat-rabbit.

  2. No, no rabbit. That would have been so cool, wouldn't it? She does have a tiny wand, though.

  3. My Alex Ross Hawkman also arrived today (from DCBS). I've been slowly assembling a roster of JSA and JLA dolls for years. The Hawkman from the Hawkman & Hawkgirl set went into the JSA set up so I've been waiting for another Hawkman, preferably cheap and loose for the JLA grouping. (I'm only doing the classic 40s JSA and the earliest complete JLA members, cutting off with Hawkman) so I ordered the Alex Ross version. Unfortunately he towers a full head taller than all the other DC direct dolls! Too bad DC didn't decide on a standard scaling for all their dolls. When I get a chance I'll take a page from Shelly's blog and post some photos on my comic blog.

  4. Oh, I'd love to see photos of your figures, Paul. I hadn't realized the Hawkman was taller. Now I'm really glad I didn't get him.

I saw the pictures for next year's Donna Troy as Wonder Girl and Troia and I want both. They've been doing some wonderful figures. Now if they'd just do Benes' JLA I'd be thrilled. I'd get Arsenal that way. :)

  5. Before I search the DC site to see if I can find shots of the Donna Troy dolls I'll ask which WG costume? There's a guy here that's been waiting to make up an original Teen Titans grouping. I gave him the Robin that came with the Infantino Batman set to further his cause.
I forgot to mention that I'm not using the Alex Ross Hawkman helmet that came with the doll. It's painted gold and I don't like the look. So I used the Silver Age helmet that was left over from the Hawkman/Hawkgirl and even though it's tight it looks good. Too much gold on those Alex Ross figures. I don't believe that every time the comics used yellow they meant gold!

  6. The Donna Troys are due in May 2007, which will make a super birthday gift for myself. There's the black, Infinite Crisis outfit and the Titans red costume with the leggings or tights, not the original Wonder Girl costume, but still from the old Teen Titans days. As of now, they're in the Just Announced section of DC Direct.
