Still Catching Up

I think I'll always be catching up. So, here are some reviews.

Flash 4
I was willing to give this a chance despite not liking Bart much, but this isn't grabbing my interest. I'm not up-to-date on all the Flash lore, so maybe I'm missing something here, but I just can't seem to get excited about this. Bland bland bland.

Jack of Fables 3
Now this I can get excited about. I've never read Fables, but I decided to give this a chance and I'm chortling merrily at Jack's adventures. Lots of fun in this book, along with a deadly serious story. The whole The Prisoner aspect gives the story some urgency, but unlike Number 6, Jack's goofy enough to keep things from getting too serious. The fantasy element of fables being real and the element of not taking itself seriously, have made this a quick favorite.

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters 3
The parallels between this book and reality is frightening, giving the story extra weight. Nice art, good characterization, and the arrival of Black Condor keep the book on a high level of entertainment. I'm looking forward to the next issue. At least here I can remind myself it's fiction.

Checkmate 6
I like this political series, but this issue felt a bit ordinary. Maybe it was just me. I do miss Alan. But the Suicide Squad could prove interesting. I just didn't feel the elements fully meshed this time.

Trials of Shazam! 2
Focus on Freddie this time and I like Freddie, so I was happy. Billy's new persona is intriguing if a bit odd looking and Freddie might end up as Captain Marvel. Why he needs a guide. I can understand the need to test him, but I would've thought he could have done that on his own, given his experience. I suppose the guide bit is an excuse to create a (hopefully) interesting character to help round out the book. And I'm not happy for Mary to be comatose in the hospital and out of the action.

I also caught up with the Wolverine Civil War tie-ins and thought they were a bit boring, given I'm not reading other Marvel titles. I still have the Wolverine: Origin titles to read, so am hopeful they'll be more entertaining.

You should add White Tiger to your pull list next month. I just saw the preview pages on Joe Q.'s Newsarama column. All I can say is wow. http://www.newsarama.com/NewJoeFridays/NewJoeFridays17.html
