Indifferent Reviews

Picked up this week's comics with a decided lack of enthusiasm. I still feel that rebooting the entire DCU from scratch makes more sense than tweaking some, rebooting others, some stuff's still in continuity, other stuff's not, yadda yadda yadda. And since I plan to read nearly none of it, reading the last few issues of the books currently on my pull list has a very "lame duck" vibe.

Supergirl 65 added a whole different vibe, that of a book meant for anyone younger than me. The story's somewhat intriguing, but the college students are too precious for words. And the art was nothing special. Why Gates and Igle couldn't stay on this book til the reboot is beyond me.

Batman 711 features the next chapter in a story focusing on Two-Face, the Riddler, and Two-Face's supposedly dead but seemingly alive wife Gilda. It's an enjoyable story, but if it's the last one I read for this book, it better have a boffo ending!

  1. Shelley, it's been good to read your thoughts about this entire reboot. I think we have very similar tastes or at least similar outlooks on so many of these characters, so I've appreciated you sharing your thoughts about it all.

As I mentioned in comments before, Teen Titans has always been a favorite of mine and I've followed them and many of their characters for years and years now. It was weird to drop Teen Titans a couple of years ago, when the book got really bad, but I took solace in Nightwing and other old favorites like Legion of Superheroes.

I don't know. I don't want to post one of those long, rambling comments that make me sound like the comic book guy from Simpsons. I guess what it boils down to, at least for me, is that maybe I've finally outgrown comics and this is the proof I needed. I've been enjoying them less and less due to the weird ways some of my favorite characters have been treated over the years. Some of those changes I've understood (of course the Legion of Superheroes needs angst... it sells!), some haven't made any sense at all (why make Dick Batman if their going to bring back Bruce just a few months later), but most of the changes have made it clear to me that I'm not the target demographic any longer. DC doesn't really want me as a reader. I mean, of course they *do* want me spending my money on their books, but they're not really writing stories for me.

I might pick up Nightwing after the reboot, because I'm curious how they're going to handle that transition. I might even try Batgirl, because my affection for Barbara Gordon is strong enough that I want to see what they do with her, but I can certainly say I'm not looking forward to it. I'll probably drop all the other Bat-books. I don't know if I can stomach yet another Legion of Superheroes reboot. I think I have five or six complete Legion of Superheroes runs already.

Well, this did turn into "that" post. Sorry about that. As always, I'm enjoying the blog and your insights. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2. Long comments are fine! They give me something to answer. ;)

Seriously, I know what you mean. I don't like thinking I might've outgrown comics. They've been part of my life since I could read. I just might need to switch to more adult ones. I just need them to be color comics because it's hard for me to read the black & white ones. I blame that on aging eyes that have trouble picking out the words when there's no real contrast as there is with text vs color art.

I think you might have more LSH runs than I do. I believe I skipped one or two because they weren't "my" Legion, if that makes any sense.

I do know I'll still be buying and reading comics. Not as many perhaps, and not necessarily the same ones as before, but I can't give them up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)
